First Lesson

Hello again,

As known, life last week was too hectic for me post.  So here is the past 2 weeks...

Sunday April 29th

In the Easter Fools post, I had mentioned that I had an impromptu sewing session with a formal neighbor.  Before my family departed, the Mother of the family indicated that I was more than welcome to come back any time to sew with the Daughter.  Secretly I have been rather excited about this, especially given my sewing journey.  In my head I have been planning on what to do first.  Once my schedule cleared up a bit, I contacted the Mother and made arrangements for another lesson.

It was a good time, and I was there much longer than I had planned to be.  Naturally, I over-packed, but at the same time I wasn't sure what all we would entirely do.  My sole goal was to play around and see what tools the Daughter liked and to teach her some hand-stitches.  In short, I wanted to gauge what the Daughter liked and sewing goals.  Currently, her focus is making American Girl Doll clothes out of old knit clothes.  According to the Mother, the Daughter had been sewing up a storm after I had left the previous visit, and was also looking forward to our lesson.

After my American Girls (Josefina, Nellie & Isabelle) were sitting pretty and the great Yard Stick hunt was successfully concluded, we overtook the kitchen table for sewing central.  I showed her all of my marking and cutting tools.  Then with the yard stick and scrap fabric that I had, I had her mark strips in using a different tool and cut the strips with a different scissor.  She liked the same things that I liked.  The strips were cut into squares and that is what we used to practice the hand-stitching in the Colette Sewing Handbook.  The patches were labeled in permanent marker what the stitch was and the Daughter even doodled to help her remember the stitch.  When she was done, the Daughter clipped the patches to a memory board that she had created.  It was a good day.

This week...

Sadly I haven't made any more progress on China Rose.  Instead, I have been inking and drawing more of my initial concept designs.  I do need to get back on track with China Rose.  I can see the finish line with that.

Well until next time...
