Weighing My Options

Hello again.

Good news is that I completed my preliminary mock-up of the skirt to determine my size.  So I now know what size I am conscerning Colette Patterns.  I am a size 18 in the waist.  Its no wonder that the size 24 waist that I used for the "Forever Project" was enormous on me.  I'm still a little puzzled on how the last time that I was measured, my waist was in the size 22 bracket.  But I'm taking it and running with it.

When I was tracing the skirt pieces with my Light Board I did mark sizes 18 and 20 but cut the fabric to a size 22.  I also used the double tracing wheel that I picked up a while back to then mark the seam allowances for each size.

Using my "mock-up" Gingham, pattern pieces, pattern weights, pink water-soluble fabric pencil and Chat cat who deemed it necessary to be my "fabric weight" I managed to trace all of the pieces.  Afterwards, I then cut out with my nice Fisker scissors.  I will admit here and now that I am seriously considering purchasing rotary cutters & mat before my Autumn Equinox Project.  I will just have to make sure that there are no live action kitty weights in the room when I use them.

With the pieces cut, I stitched the pieces together for the size 22.  Once I tried that on, the skirt laid half-way down my hips.  I decided to skip the size 20 & just for the size 18.  If 18 was too small I knew that I would be a size 20.  I then calculated the difference between the inner seam allowance edge of 18 & the outside edge of the size 22.  Then I just ran the sewing machine.  Once I tried it on it hit my waist just right.

With this knowledge I then trimmed my pattern pieces to be a size 18.  Shortly afterwards I slit the pattern pieces up to a certain point so that I can flare the skirt out more.  In the "What Style are you Cleopatra (fitted/ tailored) or Helen (loose & flowy)?" I am a Helen, Colette patterns tend to be more on the Cleopatra side with the amount of pencil skirt styles that they tend to rock.  When you know what you're doing, it isn't horribly difficult changing a Cleopatra pattern to a more Helen-like dress.  It may simply be me, but I believe that it would be more challenging doing the reverse.

That is about as far as I have gotten this week.  I will sadly admit that it will be extremely unlikely for me to complete this project by Summer Solstice, which was my original goal.  However with beginning this project within the past few weeks, I am rather happy with how far I have gotten.  I am going to wait a little bit before I officially revise my deadline goal for this project that's proper name is "Peacock Garden."  Do not be surprised if it becomes July 4th.

By next time I would like to be nearly if not 100% complete with my mock-up.

Until then...
