Where to Start? Where to Start

Hello again,

Well with the main tracings completed last week, after several weeks of nothing but tracing, I didn't quite know where to begin.  So I began and paused in several different areas.  In short there were several learning experiences this past week for me.

One completed starting point of this past week was something that I should have done a while ago.  Dolly unfortunately needed extra padding around the middle because my middle is bigger than her largest setting.  I pinned the batting to her inside.

A second starting  point of the past week was working with the skirt portion of the pattern.  Instead of waiting around to see how the original pencil style skirt fitted, I decided to manipulate the pattern for a flared skirt.  I did a pivot alteration to manipulate the skirt.  I did this to the back skirt piece.  Shortly after completing this while in the process of repeating what I did but to the front piece, I had second thoughts.  Between the skirt and the top, the skirt appears to be simpler than the top and more dependent on the outcome of the top compare to the other way around.  So I am pausing this portion of the progress for the moment.

With this mindset, I decided to complete the mock-up of the top.  Which this has now become 2 mock-ups... for the moment.  Those who know me know that I never use the phrase "Hot Mess,"but that is how I felt the 1st mock-up went.  I love Hi-Lo skirts, but I do not like that concept in tops, or at least ones that would show my stomach.  I believe that the source of this problem is the fact that I'm in the "D cups" & Colette brand admitted that their patterns are based on a "C cup."  In general it felt as if there was excessive amounts of fabric in all places except the waist.  That was even with grading right under the bust from a size 18 to an additional 2". Because I was confident that I knew what I was doing and in what needed to be done, I did not transfer any other markings onto the 1st mock-up.  In short, I had no guiding points of reference on how to adjust my pattern.

So I made a second mock-up, marking sizes 14 through to 18 with no additional 2" to throw me off even more.  Originally I traced them in pencil, then went over them in different colored sharpees.  Next time I will simply begin off with the Sharpees.  In addition to what I traced, I added dotted lines to mark the seam allowances.  After the first mock-up, I don't want to waste my time sewing up seams that will need to be taken out because they won't work for my body.  I would much rather run pins along the seams until I am sure that those placements are what I need.  Then I'll sew them.

That is right around where I ended this past week.  To currently continue on, I am going to need to copy the markings from the 1 side to the other, then begin adjusting.  Next time I would like to use freezer paper in order to create the patterns, maybe then I won't have to keep copying the same markings over and over again.  the adjustments may even be easier to transfer to the properly adjusted pattern mock-up... Maybe.

I am really hoping to finish this up by next weekend and participate at least a little bit in Colette's Me-Made May thing that they have going on.  So until next week, wish me luck.
