July Part 2: The Completed Misadventure of Nellie's Frills
The very first monumental event of this blog has taken place this past Friday.
Nellie's Birthday Frills is officially complete! YAY!
It has been quite a journey filled with mysteries like, how is it with all of the prep work & mock-up that was done at the beginning...
Why is the Right Side was longer than the left?
Or where did all my fabric go?
The red herring of the rolling stamp...
A fake-out ending of the Artist Salon, where I thought I was done...
And mistakes made...
Like notching the hem so close that you can tell where the notches are...
Then remedy that situation by using my fabric glue to tack down the notches forgetting that the glue spots are noticeable.
Some of these quandaries & issues were solved during this adventure...
The right inner sleeve was hand-stitched to the purple so that it wouldn't be soo long.
The purple hem was rolled up an additional time & a second layer of lace ribbon was added to the lining, to disguise the glue spot flub-up.
Some mysteries were not solved completely. I still have no idea on how exactly I lost my excess budgeted fabric outside of the misbehaving pleats. Whatever the reason, I did add a back panel so that Nellie wouldn't have to be stuffed into the dress. No one wants to be stuffed into an outfit knowing that there will be cake involved.
It took several months, which I was reminded by a friend is due to the amount of detailing, but it is finally complete.
What I like about this project...
1. Learning about dyeing satin (pre-blog)
(Left 2 full bottles of RIT Purple dye, Right 1 small container of Jacquard Dye-na-flow. More info in last entry about dyeing satin)
2. Made from scraps that I happened to have
3. The Detailing of the beads, ribbon & lace
4. The design, I still like it
I don't regret this design, but if I was able to redo this project from the beginning. I would do several things...
1. Not have as much of a gap between working on it as I had.
2.Once I outlined the design on the muslin mock-up, which I did...
Just drape the proper fabric to it. The satin behaved differently from the Muslin mock-up that I created off of this outlined mock-up
3. I would have done the the detailing at the bottom of the collar differently. It was extremely bulky & difficult to sew through. The white minimal ruffle I would have kept the same. The purple however I would have done Colette's trick of doing long parallel baste stitches in invisible thread (reg kept breaking on me) along both long sides. Then either have another piece of fabric sandwiched between the 2 sides or stagger the sides ontop of each other & stitch. Then I would have added them to the lace collar sandwich, trim the excess to level out the bulkiness. Afterwards, I would have attached that perfect green ribbon on top.
4. Pre-Baste Stitch seam allowances that are to be notched. The original purple hem... Need I say more.
Well that is it for this episode the next sewing adventure to take on is for the Renaissance Faire. Where I will finish remedying my cloak in all of its desired detailed glory & beginning my anxiously awaiting dress.
That is it for now. I should be back on track now with a new episode every Thur/Fri.
So until next week
